New top story on Hacker News: So, you call yourself the fastest key/value store? It's 5X, 10X and 25X faster

So, you call yourself the fastest key/value store? It's 5X, 10X and 25X faster 15 by johnwoods | 2 comments on Hacker News. It seems that several projects claim that they have built the "world's fastest key/value store" or sometimes the phrase used is even more outrageous. The following projects are in question: - Redis: https://ift.tt/a9thiX3 - KeyDB: https://ift.tt/AycEplZ - Dragonfly: https://ift.tt/du1O42f - Skytable: https://ift.tt/fbVvK2j 1. Redis: I'll start with Redis which I'd like to call the "original" key/value store because it is the oldest and most widely used of all. Being a long-time follower of Redis, I do know it's single-threaded (and uses io-threads since 6.0) and hence it achieves lesser throughput than the other stores listed above which are multi-threaded, at least to some extent. The best parts about Redis: it's the most feature complete of all the systems here, and is the oldest. (not saying old necessarily means b

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Feel bad about working in crypto, what to do?

Ask HN: Feel bad about working in crypto, what to do? 9 by whyamibad2 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I work for a DeFi protocol that has a token. I joined in 2021. I would describe myself as having neutral stance towards the crypto industry, DeFi/Ethereum more specifically. I am not a fan of most other alternative chains or Bitcoin. I understand that the majority of tokens and services are scams and markets caps are a bubble driven by speculation, but I also see true potential in the technology and ideology. Both of these opinions kind of cancel each other out leading to me being neither fully pro- nor fully anti-crypto. However, the constant backlash from the public is nagging me. All the hate for crypto, even though much of it is uninformed, makes me question my decisions. I am also worried about future employability. If crypto fails, which is a real possibility in my mind, will I be unemployable because I spend several years in the scammy crypto industry? Just feeling a bit lost. A

Show HN: The Coinbase FOMO Calculator 64 by zarie | 43 comments on Hacker News. Made this using Power BI and the Crypto Watch API. Started making this in November 2021, but never got around to publishing it, so that is the reason for the 'FOMO' in the title - probably a good thing if you 'missed out' on the crypto hype late last year. Now it serves as a way to see how much you 'saved' by not putting in money. Hope someone finds it fun!

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: When you code at work, how do you code in your time off?

Ask HN: When you code at work, how do you code in your time off? 10 by john-titor | 1 comments on Hacker News. I love my job as a data scientist, it's incredibly creative and a lot of fun. But at the end of the day I'm pretty much done with staring at code snippets and reading documentations. The same is true for the weekends - ever since I started to code for work, my motivation to code outside of it rapidly fell towards absolute zero. The problem is that I have a few private projects that I would love to try out. They all need coding. How do you find the motivation to work on such things when you also code for work? Personally, I think it's probably a healthy thing to pursue completely diverse activities professionally and privately, but at the same time I feel like not honing one's professional skills during your time off is a little bit of a wasted opportunity.
